She got in and spent the next three years living, studying and singing in vocal competitions in Italy. When she was 16, her parents took her back to Italy, where she auditioned with 330 other singers for one of nine coveted slots in Palermo’s Conservatorio di Musica Vincenzo Bellini.
“I was a bookworm, but when I heard her singing I thought, ‘That really sounds like flying,’ and I thought if my sister can do it, then I can do it, too,” she said.
